Microsoft ISA Server
Whenever possible you should enable NAT on ISA server, because then you don't need to configure anything special in POPBeamer and POPBeamer will work as if you have direct connection to the Internet.
However, ISA server is also a SOCKS v4 server and POPBeamer can use SOCKS to communicate with ISA server.
In POPBeamer you enable SOCKS in MBAdmin, View->Options-SOCKS. Make sure you select SOCKS server v4 as the server type.
Note: SOCKS v4 does not have the capability to resolve names. This means that you either need a local DNS server in your LAN or you need to use the IP address rather than the name for the POP3 server (e.g. use 178.10.11.1 rather than pop.mysip.com)
Microsoft Proxy 2.0 on SBS 4.5 Service
By default, the setup program of the Small Business Server 4.5 does not install the Winsock Proxy client and it is not recommended to install it there after, because of the problems Exchange 5.5 has with the Winsock Proxy client.
However, due to the fact that the MS Proxy is a SOCKS v4 server, POPBeamer can use SOCKS to communicate with MS Proxy.
Configurig the Socks Proxy Service on the computer running Proxy Server 2.0
To use POPbeamer with the Microsoft Socks Proxy service, make sure that port 110 (at least this port) is open on the computer running Proxy Server 2.0.
No ports are opened by default on the Socks Proxy service. For more information about this procedure, see the release notes on the Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0 compact disc, or see the following article in the article Microsoft Knowledge Base:
Q174922 Proxy Server 2.0 Release Notes
Microsoft Proxy 2.0 on SBS 4.0 Service
By default, the setup program of the Small Business Server 4.0 installs the Winsock Proxy client on the SBS server.
It should work automatically.
To verify if Winsock Proxy client is already installed and working properly you may
-
run the WinSock Proxy diagnostic utility:
-
On the server, from a command prompt, change to the Mspclnt directory
-
Type chkwsp32 -f
-
telnet to your ISP's POP3 host on port 110
-
From a command prompt type telnet xxxx.yourisp.com 110
(substitute xxxx.yourisp.com with the name of the POP3 host of your ISP)
-
You should get a connect and a line similar to +OK xxxx.yourisp.com ready
If you get the error message Unable to convert hostname to IP address (no answer from NS) then your name server is not properly configured.
In this case use the IP address of the POP3 server rather than it's name (e.g. use 178.10.11.1 rather than pop.myisp.com)
Note: Do not create a new Wspcfg.ini file and place it in the same folder where MBServer.exe resides.
WinGate 2.x Service
In WinGate configure the following:
-
Enable WinGate’s POP proxy using port 110
Using this configuration, POPBeamer will perform all its operations through WinGate. You will not need POPBeamer's dial-up capability because WinGate performs these services automatically when required.
To check mail, use user@wingate or user@domain.name if your WinGate has a fixed IP and DNS record.
This takes advantage of the non-proxy request capability of the POP3 proxy.
SOCKS Server Service
Most proxy servers support a connection via SOCKS. POPBeamer can act as a SOCKS client for outgoing connections.
SOCKS can be enabled in MBAdmin View->Option-SOCKS.
